New York vs Sarajevo

It is a mistake to see history as a cookiecutter that repeats without substantive changes, but it is a worse mistake to ignore the patterns in history that repeat over and over. Is there some meaningful lesson that 21st century people could learn from the assassination of Franz Josef in Sarajevo in 1914 (an event that directly preceded WWI)?

The acts of September 11, 2001 were certainly the work of a small group with very narrow ideological interests. They apparently managed to draw the United States military into a volatile region known for ambiguous politics and short-term victories.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 was similar in some important ways to 9/11 in New York.

Both were apparently well thought out plans designed to spark a military response by groups that had both national and ethnic (or religious) goals. Both events provided fertile ground for conspiracy theories that were plausible but complex.
