A country generally starts fighting a war for either offensive or defensive reasons but the mind of individual soldiers on all sides is universally focused on conquering and assimilating the enemy (whether politically, ideologically etc). Even if humans were to fight some alien (outer space) creatures, offensively or defensively, the psychological root of the conflict would be to assimilate the creatures into the human domain (perhaps the way animals have been assimilated).
